How Best Law Firms Evaluate Firms
According to its published methodology, Best Law Firms evaluates firms using client and professional reference feedback, lawyer evaluations, information supplied by firms, and industry leader interviews. Client surveys address experience, responsiveness, understanding of clients' needs, cost-effectiveness, civility, and willingness to refer others.
To qualify for consideration, a firm must have at least one attorney recognized in the current edition of Best Lawyers in an eligible practice area and geographic jurisdiction. Best Law Firms then evaluates the firm through its separate research process, with rankings assigned by practice area, location, and tier.
For clients considering legal representation, the scope of an award matters. This recognition applies to the practice area and designation identified above; it does not guarantee the outcome of any case.
The Peer Review Behind Best Lawyers
Founded in 1981, Best Lawyers bases individual attorney recognition entirely on peer review. Its published methodology explains that currently recognized lawyers evaluate candidates within the same geographic region and practice area. The process includes reviewing that feedback and confirming candidates are in good standing with their local bar associations.
According to Best Lawyers, attorneys cannot pay a fee to participate in or secure recognition. Optional marketing purchases, including licensed award badges, are separate from selection. This distinction matters.
Best Lawyers recognizes individual attorneys; Best Law Firms recognizes firms. Together, their evaluation processes provide context for the award while leaving each prospective client to assess the right representation for a particular matter.
What Matters to Our Clients
When someone seeks help after an investment loss or alleged professional negligence, the immediate questions are practical. What happened? What evidence supports a claim, and what would pursuing it require?
An award cannot answer those questions. A careful assessment can.
Our view is that clients deserve a candid explanation of weaknesses in their claims before committing to litigation. That means examining the available records, identifying gaps in proof, and discussing potential recovery alongside the costs and risks of proceeding.
